IBM and Teaming for Technology Colorado
In the second half of 2007, LFS received a generous grant from IBM and Teaming for Technology Colorado.The grant was for seven new Lenovo notebook computers which will go toward creating a mobile training and education center. This would allow us to expand our training capacity by holding sessions outside of our offices, and have a greater impact directly in the communities we serve throughout the state.
We recently received a grant to expand our Women's Empowerment services for single mothers and secondary wage earners, and other refugee women who face significant barriers to economic self-sufficiency. Part of the project includes offering classes in consumer education, job searching, and micro-enterprise development. This mobile training center will allow us to expand this project with computer training and access to Internet resources.
Another major group we serve is children in the foster care system. We are currently making plans to start offering Mentoring Programs to improve academic achievement and interpersonal relationships, and reduce dropouts and juvenile delinquency. We believe having a mobile computer lab will further expand and enhance the tools available to our mentors, and introduce these children to educational software resources.
Teaming for Technology also held workshops to develop IT resources for non-profit groups. Topics included understanding Internet technologies and terminologies, finding and working with the right consultant, and developing technology plans.
