When you contact us, we will invite you to attend an informational meeting or arrange to have you meet with one of our staff. Reading material will be provided to you to help you explore foster parenting and decide if you want to take the next step.
The initial application includes background and reference checks. After your application is received, training begins. Prior to your certification as a foster parent, you must complete 30 hours of pre-service training and CPR/First Aid training. A safety inspection of your home is also conducted. During this time, a home study begins, which involves detailed questionnaires along with a series of interviews with an agency staff member. The person who is assigned to do the home study will compile all the information gathered and produce a written report. This home study report is reviewed by LFS staff and approved, disapproved, or more information is requested. You will have an opportunity to review the home study for accuracy.
The entire certification process usually takes at least three months, depending upon how quickly an application and other information are received. However, we encourage you to take your time in determining if foster care is right for you. Be assured that there are children waiting!
