Open Adoption

Birthparents choose adoption for many reasons, all of which focus on the needs of the child. The decision to make an adoption plan is a loving and unselfish one. In that spirit, open adoption allows for all parties to act in the best interests of the child.

Lutheran Family Services of Colorado has been practicing open adoption since 1988. When an adoptive dad said, "Now I can't imagine doing it any other way," we wholeheartedly concurred. We believe that open adoption best serves all parties involved.

It is common for people to have initial questions and concerns about what open adoption means and how it works. At LFS, we are here to answer your questions, explore issues, and introduce you to those individuals already in an open adoption situation. We continue to be available and supportive to you before, during and after the adoption process.

Characteristics of open adoption:

  • Birth parents select the adoptive family
  • Together, birth parents and adoptive parents develop and plan their relationship with each other and with the child
  • Every open adoption relationship is specific to the families involved. With love, compassion, and an eye towards what is "best" for the child, families can share a lifetime of communication and information
  • Respect, honesty, and commitment to the plan and all parties involved
